selling in a weird economy

Hey!!

I have been doing some thinking.

I had a really interesting conversation last week with a couple folks who feel like "people aren't buying, and it feels pointless to sell."

I totally feel this. There are times lately where I look at what is happening in the world and how many messages are in front of us, and I feel overwhelmed.

So I started thinking to myself, how would I approach selling if I were starting from scratch, right now, in 2025... you know... *gestures broadly*

If I were starting from scratch as a coach, consultant, or small business owner in a bit of a strange-feeling economy, where people are cautious, distracted, and exhausted of media noise, here is where I would focus.

First, I'd create one clear offer that solves an acute problem.

Not a menu. Not a “choose your adventure” page. One very unique offer. I would focus on something specific that saves time, relieves pressure and overwhelm, and helps someone make progress with the least amount of hurdles.

You don't need to keep this offer forever. This is something to help you help them right now. Meet them where they are.

Spend a little time truly doing the work of understanding what your audience needs in real conversations with them and active listening.

Ask yourself:

What are my clients feeling/weighing out right now?

How can I make one part of that easier with my what I offer?

Second, I would make it simple as heck to buy.

In a weird economy, friction can/will extinguish sales and it makes sense why.

People are thinking about some really important things right now. They are thinking about safety, security, and DEFINITELY thinking about how to make more money. You can help them with this because you have built something meaningful that will help them make an impact.

Have one link.

Don’t make them fill out 3 forms.

Use plain language.

I promise that you don't have to impress them with your vocabulary. You just have to connect with someone who needs your help and has the resources now, so use the words they know.

Third, I'd make it known.

We have all heard that people need to see things multiple times before they act. Planting seeds won't be an overnight strategy / one-time post.

Between posts where I tell stories and share values, here’s what I’d focus on sharing:

  • A story about why I made the offer
  • A quick and valuable tip from the offer itself
  • A behind-the-scenes look at how I work with people
  • A common mistake and what to do instead
  • A reminder that the offer is still open/offer is closing

Friend, things might feel a bit weird right now, but people are still buying. They’re just buying differently.

It's not too late to shift.

Test some things out, and keep watering those seeds.

Let me know if you need a strategic eye on anything...

P.P.S music nerd moment, I just found this Janis Joplin shirt at Goodwill and I swear it's the one I had in high school, and feels like it has been washed 1000 times. It made me happy so I wanted to share.
