Hi! I don't know if you know this but aside from being a personal branding consultant, I am also a plant-girl. I love my houseplants. I have to force myself to avoid the garden section at home-improvement stores or nurseries because I want to take in all of the discounted plants, revive them and make them my plant children. The only plant I've killed in the last few years is the basil I was trying to grow inside. Do you have any tips? I'm serious. I cannot keep basil alive no matter what I try. I think I need a lamp... The other day I noticed the spider plant baby I had hung on our deck window was sad, droopy, and pale. I was confused because it had great light, it was watered, but not over-watered. I had carefully chosen this spot for it to live and it was the perfect place for this clay hanging pot I got at one of my favorite local shops. Perfect amount of sun. Perfect spot above the vent. But the plant didn't thrive there, even with its parent plant thriving in the same location, even with seemingly perfect conditions. Instead of leaving it on that window and hoping for the best just because I checked all the boxes for this particular plant, I decided one day to move it to the window above our kitchen sink, facing the morning light, and in bit of a warmer, and more hydrated space. Almost instantly, like magic, I watched the plant perk up. It changed its mind with the change of environment. The leaves turned greener, they lifted themselves up as if this was the first time they had ever experienced the sun. It looked like it had outstretched its arms to me as a thank you. You're welcome, spider baby. I love you. Like plants, it can be really difficult to change environments. Maybe you have checked all of the boxes you can to make the current way of life and work, be what it is "supposed" to be. And maybe it feels like something is still not quite right, or stuck, even with all of those things you thought you needed. Maybe you know you need to change part of your environment but you have been looking for a sign. Maybe this email is the sign. The thing is, it's hard to think, grow, and take in the right nutrients if you are not in the right environment. On average, individuals spend about 90% of their time indoors. (source: Forbes) Given this substantial amount of time, optimizing your life when you are in your spaces at home and in your work space feels... pretty crucial for improving your well-being. Every time I can remember deeply growing in my business or life, it came with a bit of an environment shift. A weekend a way where I could think straight. Joining a group of encouraging folks. Spending some time talking intentionally with a mentor, therapist, or coach. Shifting my temperature, or other senses. Just like spider baby's change of location, it wasn't so dramatic. It was just a subtle shift toward the sunlight. So how do you change your environment in a life-giving way without making a dramatic shift? How do you turn to face the sun just a little bit more? I have a few ideas. Find community. Find the people who encourage you, who show up the way you show up, who are balanced in their give and take. Intentionally create some time for yourself to hear yourself think. It might be outside of your comfort zone, but go to the retreat, or book a couple of days away, plan some "me-time" to free-write at the park in your car or at a coffee shop with your headphones in, even if it feels wildly uncomfortable at first. Talk to someone about it. One of the most common pitfalls of entrepreneurs is thinking everyone is successful while you are not. You'd be surprised once you start investing in the right community of people, to be reminded -- every business owner experiences high and low moments regularly. Challenge your senses. When I need a change of environment, I try to create an opportunity for me to change my temperature (take a hot or cold shower), smell something different (use a fav essential oil or light a candle), taste something different (change the sensation of whatever I am tasting, drink some ginger tea or have my favorite snack), see something different (go for a walk or to my favorite park, or challenge myself to work from a coffee shop)... you get the idea. The point is... You don't have to make a GRANDIOSE upheaval of your life in order to experience an environmental change. You can make subtle changes to your relationships, your morning, your weekend, to how you spend your time, and although they are subtle, they might make everything different, in the best way. Cheers to turning toward the sun together ☀️ Lauren V. Davis I want to share a few ways for you to shift your environment coming up. It would mean a lot to me if you check these out.
